Marvel's Eternals Film Makes a Change to One Hero's Powers

In director Chloé Zhao's upcoming Marvel Studios film Eternals, Captain Marvel alum Gemma Chan takes on her second role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, stepping into the shoes of the Eternal known as Sersi. Chan recently spoke about Sersi and her superpowers -- and it looks like the film will be making some changes from the comics.
"Sersi is not your typical superhero: she's not necessarily the best fighter, she doesn't have the most obviously impressive powers," Chan told Vogue. "The main thing is she's an empath. She has a connection with humans, and with the world and the Earth. That is her strength, so I leant into that."
In the original Marvel comic books, Sersi is a telepath with the ability to psychically communicate, read minds, project thoughts into other people and even use hypnosis. However, despite being a telepath, she is not shown to be an empath in the comics. That being said, while the film version of Sersi will apparently have the power of psychic empathy at her disposal, it remains to be seen if this power will outright replace her usual telepathy, or simply add to it.
Nevertheless, Sersi will be the second major empath to be introduced to the MCU, the first being Pom Klementieff's Mantis, who debuted in 2017's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. Klementieff subsequently reprised her role as Mantis in 2018's Avengers: Infinity War and 2019's Avengers: Endgame. She is expected to return in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and Disney+'s Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special.
Sersi technically first appeared as Circe in 1950's Venus #9. However, the character as we know her today debuted in 1976's Eternals #3, which was written and illustrated by Eternals creator Jack Kirby (though her name was spelled as "Sersy" in that issue).
Eternals is currently scheduled to hit theaters on Nov. 5, making it the third of four MCU films set for release in 2021. The first was Black Widow, which released simultaneously in theaters and on Disney+ Premier Access on July 9. Eternals will release after Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, with arrives on Sept. 3, and before Spider-Man: No Way Home, which follows suit on Dec. 17.
Marvel Studios' Eternals is scheduled to release in theaters on Nov. 5.
