Star Wars: What Happened to Gar Saxon, Maul’s Mandalorian Commander?
Ian Cardona
In the final season of Star Wars: The Clone Wars, viewers were introduced -- or, technically, reintroduced -- to one of the coolest-looking Mandalorian characters to grace the screen: Gar Saxon, a devout follower of Darth Maul. Saxon was the commander of the Sith Lord's Mandalorian army, whose members all wore black and red armor to illustrate their allegiance to Maul. However, Saxon's look was heightened by his iconic Mandalorian helmet, which was outfitted with horns to echo Maul's signature look. Saxon took part in The Clone Wars' final arc, which focused on the Siege of Mandalore.
As leader of Maul's army, Saxon helped his master fight both Clone troopers and Bo-Katan's Mandalorian loyalists, while Maul attempted to form an alliance with Ahsoka Tano. Now, with the character set to get his own Black Series action figure from Hasbro, interest in Gar Saxon is once again spiking. Fans might find themselves wondering what happened to the character in The Clone Wars. Well, it turns out he survived the galactic conflict -- and he even returned in Star Wars Rebels.
Gar Saxon first appeared in the continuity of Star Wars: The Clone Wars in the Darth Maul: Son of Dathomir comic series. The comic adapted unproduced screenplays from Season 6 of the animated series after its cancellation. Saxon showed up as one of the Mandalorian warriors faithful to Darth Maul. He, along with other Mandalorians, broke Darth Maul free from Palpatine's grasp, and he helped his master fight the Separatist forces.
Then, his story continued in Season 7 of The Clone Wars, after Disney brought the animated series back on Disney+. During the Siege of Mandalore arc, Saxon fought alongside Darth Maul's followers, but they were eventually abandoned by the Sith Lord when he no longer saw a use for them. At the end of the battle, Saxon was defeated and captured by the Clones. But it wouldn't last long.
In fact, Saxon popped up again in Season 3 of Star Wars Rebels, which takes place more than 15 years after The Clone Wars. By that time, Saxon had become a figure of power in the Galactic Empire. He was the leader of the Imperial Super Commandos, a squadron of Mandalorians who obeyed the Empire, as well as the chosen ruler of Mandalore.
However, all of that came to an end in the Rebels Season 3 episode "Legacy of Mandalore." As Sabine Wren returned home to her family with the Darksaber in hand, she intended on rallying the various Mandalorian clans against the Empire. Saxon resisted, of course, and the two ended up fighting in a duel. Sabine eventually defeated him, but she chose to spare his life. Seeing this as a weakness, and an opportunity for victory, Saxon moved to strike Sabine down, only to be shot dead by her mother, Ursa Wren.
Although Saxon met his end in Star Wars Rebels, the villain ruled Mandalore for a long period of time. He may be dead, but there is always a chance we could see him return in the upcoming spinoff/sequel of The Clone Wars, Star Wars: The Bad Batch.
Streaming on Disney+, the final season of Star Wars: The Clone Wars stars Matt Lanter as Anakin Skywalker, Ashley Eckstein as Ahsoka Tano, Dee Bradley Baker as Captain Rex and the clone troopers, James Arnold Taylor as Obi-Wan Kenobi, Katee Sackhoff as Bo-Katan and Sam Witwer as Maul.
