The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt - How to Create Mastercrafted Bear Armor

In The Witcher 3, quality armor can be hard to come by, and most sold by merchants or armorers can be generic and low level. However, Geralt may be able to craft Ursine Witcher's Armor, the armor of the School of the Bear, which offers high protection levels and combat bonuses, along with unique bonuses for wearing a full set. Wearing at least three of the pieces will enable a chance for a new Quen shield to cast when an old one shatters with no stamina cost. If six pieces are worn, damage dealt by abilities involving the Quen sign increases by 200%.
To complete the Witcher's Armor, the player will need to unlock the services of Yoana, the Master Armorer located in Crow's Perch, then find the diagrams for the armor and their upgrades. From there, players will have to find and complete the Bear School Armor, from initial base gear to Mastercrafted level. Along the way, though, they'll find upgrades for the silver and steel swords.

Scavenger Hunt: Bear School Gear

Like all of the Witcher's armor, you need to find the base diagrams first to upgrade the Ursine to a powerful Mastercrafted level. They are located in Skellige, but it's recommended to wait until at least level 20 before beginning the quests. To begin the hunt for the gear, Ibrahim Savi, Kaer Trolde's armorer, sells maps that will give you the location markers or finding one of the first diagrams will locate the rest.
The Silver Sword Diagram is the easiest to get to when you first arrive on Skellige, as it's located north of Rogne in Fort Etnir. After dealing with a few gargoyles and an ice elemental, there will be a room located east with a skeleton and a letter. Looting the skeleton will give you the diagram and a letter pointing you to the Steel Sword Diagram.
The Steel Sword Diagram is located at the Ruined Inn on the southern shore of Ard Skellige. There will be sirens on the way to the inn, and eliminating the wraiths will reward you with 50 crowns for clearing the area. In one of the rooms, there is a chest with the diagram and a note pointing you to Spikeroog for the Ursine Crossbow.
The Ursine Crossbow is located in a cave on Spikeroog, which runs alongside the quest Contract: Here Comes the Groom. Heading into the cave, you may be attacked by drowners, but continue walking along until you near a small fork in the path. Heading up to the ledge on the right, continue climbing until you see a skeleton across a gap. Crossing the gap and looting the skeleton will reveal the diagram and a letter, pointing you to the location for the rest of the diagrams, Clan Tuirseach's former castle.
The castle is near Yngvar's Fang on Ard Skellig. As you enter the castle, make your way to the bottom floor; visible through an archway is the castle's interior, where a skeleton lies near a chair. To reach this area, continue heading downstairs to the dungeon where a wraith will spawn. A skeleton halfway down the dungeon will contain a ballad that tells of the Witcher Gerd's fate. At the end of the dungeon, a lever on the wall will open the cells and some wraiths will spawn. There is a tunnel in one of the cells that you need to travel through, but it's relatively straightforward. Eventually, making your way through the tunnel and using Aard to blast rocks into the castles' interior, you will find a chest in the corner containing the armor, boots, gauntlets and trousers diagrams.

Crafting Advice

The Witcher 3 Bear Armor Crafting
The Witcher 3 Bear Armor Crafting
For crafting and upgrading the Ursine Armor, the components are obtainable but somewhat expensive. The main component in the clothing is ingots ranging from Dark Steel Ingots to Dimeritium Ingots and various Plates. Buying a single Dimeritium Ingot cost around 1400 crowns, so consider crafting them instead if you don't want to break the bank.
As expected with Witcher's armor, there are monster components needed to craft. Most of these are generic such as Monster Blood, Monster Bones and Monster Brains, which can be dismantled from sources such as Drowners, Ghouls and Nekkers. There are a few instances where the player will need to source specific monsters for the component, such as the Cured Draconid Leather, as it requires Chitinous Shells.

Upgrade Diagrams - Part 1

The Witcher 3 Bear Armor Part 1
The Witcher 3 Bear Armor Part 1
The Bear School Gear Part 1 focuses on upgrading the boots, armor and silver sword from the base version to enhanced, all located in Skellige. To get the location markers, buy Ibrahim Savi's first map.
The boots diagram is located in an unmarked cave southeast of Wild Shore, North of Holmstein's Port. The Farting Trolls will try to attack you; once killed, you can look around the rubble to find a chest with the diagram near a broken boat.
The armor diagram is found in the Grotto, which is the same cave in the quest The Sad Tale of the Grossbart Brothers. Continuing through the Grotto, you'll eventually have to kill the three brothers. The chest with the diagram sits at the southern part of the chamber near one of the bed mats.
The silver sword diagram is in an unmarked ruin northeast of Kaer Gelen, North of Giants' Toes. Harpies are likely to attack you in this area, and alghouls will attack once you enter the interior of the fortress. At the end of the tunnel in the last room, you will find a chest opposite of where you entered with the diagram.

Upgrade Diagrams - Part 2

The Bear School Gear Part 2 focuses on upgrading the gauntlets, trousers and steel sword from the base version to enhanced, all located in Skellige. To get the location markers, buy Ibrahim Savi's second map.
The gauntlets are located on Ard Skellige, southeast of Fort Etnir, the location of the silver sword diagram. Heading down from the Fort, you will find a ruin past a nearby pond. You will find a chest with the diagram up the stairs on the north side of the tower.
The steel sword is located at Kaer Almhult, a small island west of Eldberg Lighthouse. It is one of the more difficult diagrams to get as it is a former prison containing pirates and guard dogs. From the main entrance into the courtyard, there is an overturned wagon with stairs behind it. Going up the stairs, a chest with the diagram is seen at the end of the hallway.
You will need to sail or swim to an island north of Marlin Coast to get to the trousers. A small cave is seen on the southern side, which is accessible by swimming; the chest with the diagram is in here.

Upgrade Diagrams - Part 3

The Bear School Gear Part 3 focuses on upgrading all the diagrams to superior, all located in Velen. To get the location markers, buy Ibrahim Savi's third map. As Velen is accessible early in the game, some of these diagrams may have already been discovered if you explored enough.
All of the armor diagrams are found in a cave northwest of Hanged Man's Tree. If you haven't already been here to rescue Thaler for the quest A Deadly Plot, you'll have to defeat several nekkers. Once the coast is clear, follow the cave until it curves and the chest with all the diagrams is found in a small alcove to the left.
The steel sword diagram is found at the Ruined Tower, south from Downwarren, but guarded by an earth elemental. Once defeated, the chest is located hidden behind a tree and nearby bush.
The silver sword diagram is found southwest of The Orphans of Crookback Bog, in a cave used during the quest Contract: Swamp Thing. If you have not progressed enough in the story to receive The Eye of Nehaleni, you can still get inside through the west entrance. You will need to kill Ignis Fatuus and a few other foglets, which completes the contract. A body will be found against a wall with the chest behind him containing the diagram.

Upgrade Diagrams - Part 4

The Bear School Gear Part 4 focuses on upgrading all the diagrams to Mastercraft level, all located in Velen. To get the location markers, buy Ibrahim Savi's fourth map. As Velen is accessible early in the game, some of these diagrams may have already been discovered.
The steel sword diagram is found northwest of Blackbough in a cave behind The Pellar's hut. Depending on your progression in the story, there will be a bear or nekkers in the cave to defeat. The chest containing the diagram will be located past a deer corpse behind a column on the right.
The silver sword diagram is northeast of Olena's Grove on a small island with a monster nest. Drowners will continuously spawn here until you take out the nest, so you may want to clear it out before finding the diagram in a chest next to the rock.
The armor diagrams are found at the Destroyed Bastion south of the Crossroads and are guarded by a cyclops. As cyclopses are tough to defeat monsters, you'll want to avoid the area until around level 34.  The chest itself can be found near the grindstone.
