WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Wynonna Earp Season 4, Episode 6, "Holy War, Part 2," which aired Sunday on Syfy.
Wynonna Earp and her friends had started off Season 4 on uncertain ground in the aftermath of their battle against the Cult of Bulshar. Wynonna had lost her trusty revolver Peacemaker, a mythical six-shooter once wielded by her ancestor, the legendary lawman Wyatt Earp, after Bulshar stole it, forging it into a sword before it mysteriously disappeared. Wynonna's younger sister Waverly and the undead gunslinger Doc Holliday were both trapped in a pocket dimension for 18 months, setting up an awkward reunion between Waverly and her longtime girlfriend Nicole Haught. And, all the while, the Earp's historical rivals, the Clanton family, had arrived in the small town of Purgatory, plotting to finally achieve their revenge against the Earps.
The first victim of the Clantons' vendetta was Nicole, who had cut a desperate deal with the Clanton matriarch Margo to be reunited with Waverly. In exchange, Margo had placed a curse of Nicole to unconsciously attempt to murder Wynonna, with Nicole agreeing to be drowned in holy water by Black Badge officer Jeremy Chetri and Nedley and resuscitated free of the curse. Waverly walked in just as the drowning was complete, and before the three could revive Nicole as planned, they were interrupted by Margo's son who had been transformed into a Reaper by his mother to hunt down and kill Waverly. While the trio, aided by Nicole's spirit, was able to thwart the Reaper Waverly, they must set out to reunite Nicole's soul with her revived body before she experiences permanent brain damage.
Meanwhile, Wynonna and Doc encounter Doc's old flame Rosita who had gone in hiding from the Revenants that had been menacing Purgatory before they were dispelled from town by Bulshar in Season 3. Transported to a mythical convent where Peacekeeper had been teleported to, Wynonna and Rosita run afoul of the demonic nuns running the unholy space, holing up in the basement where Wynonna discovers Peacemaker. Seizing it just as the warrior nuns break into the basement, the sword magically transforms back into a revolver just in time for Wynonna to shoot the lead nun in the face, killing her and causing the other sisters to swear their fealty to her in awe.
Wynonna's return to Purgatory, now armed with Peacemaker coincides with Waverly deciding to confront Margo one-on-one, with a shotgun in hand. Using her angelic powers, Waverly seemingly destroys Margo, causing Nicole to reawaken in her body with the curse lifted. When Margo's other son Sheriff Holt learns his mother has been killed by an Earp, he enters a heated confrontation with Wynonna only to be talked down by Doc. However, just as Doc appears to have defused the situation, Wynonna shoots the Clanton in the back. The most underhanded thing that Doc could think of from his own time in the Wild West, his loss of respect for Wynonna is visibly present, poised to rupture any hopes of a rekindled romantic future between the pair.
The midseason finale for Wynonna Earp's fourth season ended on a surprisingly happy note, with Nicole finally accepting Waverly's marriage proposal. And after spending the first half of the season without her trusty firearm, Wynonna has rearmed herself with Peacemaker, though her relationship with Doc has struggled in the immediate aftermath. The Clantons appear to have been defeated by the Earps as they move forward, but given the relative ease that Margo was dispelled, the witch's potential return after the midseason break may not be a surprise.
Produced by SEVEN24 Films and IDW Entertainment, Wynonna Earp stars Melanie Scrofano as the title character, Dominique Provost-Chalkley as Waverly, Katherine Barrell as Nicole Haught and Tim Rozon as Doc Holliday. Season 4 airs on Sundays at 10pm ET/PT on Syfy.
